Grounding Skills
The resources below are meant to normalize mental illness, and provide options for managing symptoms when finding support may be difficult for any reason.
NOTE:
The materials presented here are not intended to be diagnostic tools, nor intended to serve as treatment. We provide management tools and basic counseling. We will do everything we can to connect you to a therapist or other clinical provider.
Grounding skills, also known as Mindfulness practices, are meant to keep us in the moment. They assist in responding to situations, triggers, and other events that can often generate a storm of negative emotions.
Reacting instead of responding to our feelings, thoughts, and experiences in the moment can damage our relationships. With ourselves, our friends, our family, our professional relationships, and so much more. Reaction typically refers to that initial burst of negative emotions; one that often leads us to lash out. This may come in yelling, throwing things, or other unhealthy and potentially damaging behaviors; both to ourselves and others.
Allowing ourselves and others to pause and remain in the moment will help us respond and diffuse emotional bursts. When we respond to situations, we facilitate healthy conversation that leads to growth within us and, hopefully, our relationships. Responding provides us time to reflect on our emotions and properly convey our needs and how we feel to others.
Practicing how to respond has been shown to improve overall physical and emotional health - both personally and societally.
Please, visit one of our future clinics to join us in practicing a variety of skills.
